Love (Weekend Bender)
So I asked Kenny to write me a story based on my idea. He actually sent me a pretty good version, so I felt compelled to try to meet his request:
You’re on. But since I quit guitar for the same reason, would you write me a song that has rap lyrics that sound like Q-tip from Tribe Called Quest over Jack Johnson style guitar (kind of a folkified Diggable Planets sound), with subject matter something like “here’s some crazy things that people do when they’re in love?” That would be sweet!
I swear I finish more of these silly rap songs than my more “serious” work.

Hey, look. Lyrics!
Love - It’ll wrap your tongue in a blender, baby
Love - is a thing many-splendored, baby
Love- I drank and punch drunk am I
like a frat boy coming from weekend bender, baby
Love
What a mess it’ll get you in
Acting like you’re Ritalin-addicted
Afflicted like a Bedouin is
with a heart restless to roam
So on your mark, get set, get ready, get going
It’s clear to one and all I’m a lover not a fighter
I’d rather walk away and rock an all nighter
But for love I’ll stand my ground and I’ll trade shots
with a gorilla from Manila or cop from Watts
Love will have him doing things he wouldn’t normally do
He’ll clean all the manure from the Sacramento Zoo
He’ll be sucking toes on a pair of skanky feet
But to him they taste sweet
‘Cause you know that he’s in love
CHORUS
Love - he was crushing on this baby
He wanted to play it cool
And not drool for the lady
Or play the fool
He worked out his machinations
The setting of group to have some conversation
He phones all his friends to see a kung fu movie
He calls up the cutie
He says it’ll be groovy
(Parenthesis)
Another thing that love will do
You stop vetting all your verbiage till you sound a like a fool
You better get used to the taste of shoe leather
(End of parenthesis)
Back to the matter
His ex gets wind and she wants to go
She says she needs a ride; he doesn’t say no
Nobody else shows so there they are in the theater
The cutie’s on his left
The ex is sitting nearer
At the end of the flick the three stand outside the theater
The girl says her good-byes
The ex says, see you later
She’s in love
CHORUS
Love- we’ll make a date with the preacher, baby
Love - you’ll get the last slice of pizza, baby
Love - My pants are here for you to wear
I’ll even get tickets to the Bette Midler feature, baby

It seems to work all right for me. You’re clicking the play button, right? And you’re waiting for it finish buffering?
Another option is to click the link below the player and your browser might play it using Quicktime or Windows Media Player.
Another other option is to right-click the link and save it to your computer.

This song is awesome! Where did you come up with such a great idea?
For real tho’, you know I love this song.
Question: why is myopic pilgrim’s music so much better than the stuff on the radio, heathen or Christian?

Jos this is awesome! I’m jealous of your amazing rap and (lyric) skills.

Seriously, Kenny, my stuff is better? Didn’t you liken my rap style to Will Smith and DC Talk? Hardly the height of the genre.

I’m highly biased toward good lyrics - to me, bad lyrics are the bane of contemporary music. Your lyrics are so much better than the average radio fodder.
And I think you’re undervaluing DC Talk and Will Smith. They both have really good sounds; plus, how many artists have songs that people are listening to years and decades after they’ve been released or even since the band has retired?
I know your preference is toward more sophisticated music, but don’t undervalue your ability to have popular appeal.

Another that’s really cool about the song is the guitar/piano riff that goes with it - the notes are cool, and so is the stutter-step rhythm thing…

This song has a fun sound. It sounds like old school Will, just like Secret Weapon. I am diggin’ the guit/piano riff as well. The lyrics are great. I am so glad you got the “cutie” in the end. You and Susan are so perfect! We still can’t see the Mateo video because it says there are errors. I don’t know if there is anything else to try…
