The idea of fasting isn’t for self-flagellation. I’m not punishing myself to make myself worthy. I’m not showing God I’m really, really serious. It’s to quiet down part of the distractions of life, to focus on something else. I fast from one thing to feast on another, usually prayer. When I want to reach for the latte, I instead reach for the Spirit.
